Music Spoken Here presents Philip Clouts Quartet

Pianist and composer Philip Clouts brings his quartet to The Marr’s Bar, Worcester on Thursday 9th April, on the fortnightly “Kind of Jazz” program curated by Worcestershire promoter Music Spoken Here.
Born in Cape Town, raised in London and now living in Dorset, Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a musical journey of discovery across all five continents, soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso, the bluesy melodies of Middle Eastern praise songs, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of gospel, while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans, Keith Jarret and Charles Lloyd.
He is a founder member and composer for the London-based world-jazz outfit Zubop and its larger offshoot ZubopGambia, a collaboration with BBC World Music award-winner Juldeh Camara.
He has released three albums with various lineups of the Philip Clouts Quartet – “Sennen Cove” (2010), “The Hour of Pearl” (2013) and most recently “Umoya” (2015), named from the Zulu word for ‘life force’. The current lineup, featuring saxophonist Samuel Eagles with Marcus Penrose (bass) and Ted Carrasco (drums) impressed Music Spoken Here instigator Dave Fuller when they played at Kidderminster Jazz Club in February last year, resulting in this booking by the progressive Worcester club.
Admission is complimentary for Music Spoken Here Club Members, or £15 on the door for non-members. For more information head to the Music Spoken Here website.
