Proudly hailing from the North East, Amelia Coburn is swiftly proving herself one of the UK’s most compelling new voices. Her first single of 2025, the hauntingly poetic Sandra, confirms what many already suspect: Coburn is not just a rising star – she’s an artist of rare narrative depth and singular vision.
Following the critical success of her debut album Between the Moon and the Milkman – produced by Bill Ryder-Jones and lauded by the likes of Paul Weller and Paul Heaton – Sandra arrives as a spellbinding highlight. Released 5th March, the track recounts the real-life story of a French woman Coburn lodged with during her university days. Trapped in an abusive marriage, her landlady’s act of rebellion – cremating her husband against his dying wish – is transformed into a darkly wry tale of defiance and dignity.
“I wanted to carve out a space for her story,” Amelia says. “Filming in Paris, retracing her footsteps, brought it all full circle.” Drawing aesthetic cues from Le Ballon Rouge, the accompanying video is set to elevate Sandra to cult classic status in its own right.
Sonically, Amelia treads the shadowed paths between folk tradition and theatrical gothic-pop. Think Scott Walker meets Kate Bush with a hint of Jacques Brel. Her arrangements are rich but never overwrought, anchored by that crystalline voice and lyrical finesse that has earned her comparisons to the greats.
Live, Coburn’s presence is equally arresting. She joins The Levellers and Jim Moray on tour this year, while also embarking on a headline run of UK dates through May and June. International showcases at SXSW and Reeperbahn hint at a global audience ready to follow wherever she leads.
A fixture on BBC Radio and now a name to watch in major end-of-year lists, Amelia Coburn is not simply one to watch – she’s one to follow into the strange, beautiful world she conjures so effortlessly between the moon and the milkman.
