The Marr’s Bar, 12 Pierpoint Street, Worcester WR1 1TA
Thursday 12th March, 7:30pm doors for 8pm start
£15 on the door
A series of gigs curated by Worcestershire promoter Music Spoken Here, featuring young bands from different cities, continues on Thursday 12th March with Sungrass, originating from Bristol.
The series, part of the popular, progressive fortnightly “Kind of Jazz” program, has already seen the Marr’s Bar in Worcester packed with Ankora, an 8-piece jazz ensemble featuring eight young women (average age just 20!) currently making their mark on the London jazz scene and most recently Abacus, a sextet formed in Birmingham in 2022 by students at the Birmingham Conservatoire.
Sungrass is a trumpet-led quartet drawing inspiration from the melodic sensibilities of contemporary jazz artists such as The RH Factor, Pat Metheny and Butcher Brown. Their original music also leans into influences from gospel, fusion, and soul.
The ‘box fresh’ band released their debut single “Intention” in November 2025 with an EP due out this year. Fronting the band on trumpet and flugelhorn is Matthew Hill, who appeared on the Music Spoken Here program at The Marr’s Bar in March 2023 with Laimu – another band from Bristol featuring vocalist Lucy Sparks. Hill is joined by Lucian McCauley on keys, Ollie Hatch on bass and George Milnes on drums.
Doors open at 7:30pm with a live DJ set from Moore Fe Jazz before Sungrass take to the stage around 8pm. Admission is complimentary for Music Spoken Here Club Members, or £15 on the door for non-members.
