Gig Preview: The Mess They Left Behind
with Lennox + Chewie
Friday 3rd April – Marrs Bar, Worcester
Worcester’s underground has always had a knack for producing bands that don’t quite fit the mould—and that’s exactly where The Mess They Left Behind thrive. Refusing to be boxed into any one genre, the trio crash together elements of metal, thrash, punk, and flashes of folk and pop into something that feels chaotic in theory but razor-sharp in execution.
This isn’t genre fusion for the sake of it. It’s instinctive. It’s lived-in. And it hits hard.
From the moment they kick in, you’re pulled along by fast-paced intros that barely give you time to breathe, before dropping into aggressive, no-frills verses. Then—just as you think you’ve got them figured out—they flip it into chant-along hooks that stick long after the set ends. It’s that push-and-pull between abrasion and accessibility that makes them impossible to ignore.
Since emerging in the wake of the pandemic, The Mess They Left Behind have been steadily building a name for themselves across Worcester’s live circuit. Regular appearances at The Marrs Bar, Paradiddles, The Oil Basin, 45 Live and slots at the Drunken Monkey Music Festival have helped forge a loyal and growing crowd—one that knows exactly when to shout back.
But this isn’t a band content with staying local.
With 2024 firmly in their sights, they’re gearing up to take that energy further afield, bringing their unpredictable, high-impact live show to new audiences across the UK.
It’s no surprise they sound as tight—and as explosive—as they do. This is a band built from experience. Between them, members have shared stages with Ocean Colour Scene, Carter USM, The Fratellis and Juliette & The Licks, alongside TV appearances on Sky, Men & Motors and Granada, plus spins on Kerrang! Radio. That pedigree shows—not in polish, but in presence.
Frontman Griff (vocals/guitar), whose past projects include Anniesblind, One Second After and Dirty Little Habits, leads from the front with a raw, commanding delivery. Alongside him, Dave B (ex-Pony Fat, Massive Head Trauma) locks in on bass, while Martin (Bufflehead, Shamefaced) drives everything forward from behind the kit with relentless intent.
Their influences read like a crash course in rebellion and melody—The Clash, Social Distortion, Therapy?, Manic Street Preachers, Metallica, Megadeth, Guns N’ Roses, NOFX, Billy Bragg, Blink-182, Iron Maiden—but what they produce doesn’t feel derivative. It feels like a collision.
And that’s the point.
The Mess They Left Behind aren’t here to fit in. They’re here to leave a mark—and judging by the noise building around them, they already have.
