Bottles Wine Bar, Worcester
Worcester’s live music calendar gets a suitably stylish shake-up this February as local jazz octet West Coast Sound step into 2026 with their first appearance of the year. The band will be bringing their sun-drenched swing to Bottles Wine Bar, promising an afternoon steeped in the mellow sophistication of classic West Coast cool jazz.
Featuring a striking five-horn frontline, West Coast Sound have quickly earned a reputation for curating a refreshing and rarely heard repertoire. Rather than leaning on the usual big-band staples, the octet have built a growing pad of arrangements drawn from the golden era of 1950s cool jazz. Expect carefully crafted pieces from the iconic Miles Davis Birth of the Cool sessions alongside music penned by some of the genre’s finest arrangers and bandleaders, including Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Lennie Niehaus and Bill Holman.
This music is all about texture, finesse and swing with subtlety. Think warm brass harmonies, intricate ensemble passages and relaxed yet propulsive rhythms that conjure smoky clubs and late-afternoon sunshine in equal measure. It’s a sound that rewards close listening, but remains effortlessly accessible – perfect for a laid-back Sunday gathering.
The setting couldn’t be more fitting. Bottles Wine Bar’s cosy atmosphere and impressive drinks list provide the ideal backdrop for an afternoon gig, whether you’re a dedicated jazz enthusiast or simply looking for something a little different to round off the weekend. From carefully selected wines to beers and cocktails, the venue offers plenty of ways to settle in and soak up the music.
Best of all, there’s no entry fee. A tips jar will be circulating for those who feel inclined to support the musicians, making this a relaxed and welcoming event for anyone curious about live jazz.
For cool swinging sounds, great drinks and easy Sunday vibes, this is one Worcester gig you won’t want to miss.
