Music Spoken Here presents
John Law’s Re-Creations
The Marr’s Bar, 12 Pierpoint Street, Worcester WR1 1TA
Thursday 26th June 2025, 8pm
One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists is set to bring his Re-Creations project to Worcester on Thursday 26th June in the last show of the Music Spoken Here program of jazz, funk and fusion at The Marr’s Bar, before a short summer break.
John Law started out studying as a classical pianist but turned to jazz and improvised music in his early twenties. He has recorded over 40 albums, played at over 50 festivals worldwide, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and London Jazz Festival at Queen Elizabeth Hall and has worked with many musicians including Gwilym Simcock, Andy Sheppard, Jason Rebello, Tim Garland and Evan Parker. His current projects include the Congregation quartet and Renaissance, an ambient, electronic keyboards project with saxophonist Jon Lloyd.
This event will feature John’s ‘Re-Creations’ acoustic quartet that reimagines familiar songs with arrangements for a jazz quartet. As John describes it “We take some of the best-known tunes from all genres – jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes – and re-create them, finding new arrangements and new angles to present them. Sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them. But no matter how free and inventive we get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it when it comes back.”
Re-Creations, with various lineups, have produced four albums since 2017, the most recent being Many Moons, recorded with the current lineup of saxophonist Sam Crockatt, whose debut album “Howierd” won the Parliamentary Jazz Album of the Year 2009, Henrik Jensen on double bass and Alex Goodyear on drums. Playing striking arrangements of familiar tunes from Abba to Adele, Debussy to Deep Purple and Mancini to Van Morrison, the fun part is seeing how quickly you can recognise them!
Doors open at 8pm for an 8:30pm start. Admission is “pay what you can” on the door, with the suggested contribution of £10-15 per person. Alternatively, Music Spoken Here Club Members enjoy complementary entry to all the fortnightly Music Spoken Here events for just £18 per month.
