Three towering gulls have landed in Cathedral Square as The Worcester Plinth unveils its latest commission, The Gulls by Worcester artist Sarah Dukes. Launching today (19 January 2026), the sculptural trio will dominate the square for 28 days, constructed entirely from salvaged and discarded materials.

Made from old wire, hose, fruit nets, plastic strips, flip-flops and ribbon, the junk-built gulls reflect an uncomfortable truth: while gulls are often seen as unwanted visitors, it’s human waste that draws them into the city. “Gulls are remarkable birds, able to adapt and change to new surroundings,” says Dukes. “People’s views of them vary wildly in Worcester — love them or hate them, they’re here, and they’re residents of the city.”

The Worcester Plinth team are delighted to bring the work to the heart of Worcester. “Cathedral Square is the perfect setting,” says organiser Oliver Carpenter. After their stay, the gulls will reappear in three unexpected locations across the city as part of the Plinth’s wider programme. The project is supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via Worcester City Council and the Elmley Foundation, with additional help from City Council and County Highways teams.

Alongside the installation, educational workbooks and interactive activities will invite schools and the public to explore sculpture, gulls and urban wildlife.
