Sunday 24th August

Few songwriters can capture the quiet poetry of life quite like Buddy Mondlock. His songs have found their way onto the albums of some of the finest voices in folk – Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith and Janis Ian among them. You may already know The Kid – recorded by David Wilcox, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Cry, Cry, Cry – a song that has travelled far, sung as often by the glow of a campfire as under stage lights.

Mondlock’s gift is to draw listeners into a world where small details shimmer with meaning: a snowflake charts the course of a relationship, a Roman cat slips your wallet, or the sea itself might spill you over its edge. In his universe, even the dreams that don’t come true still matter.

His latest album, Filament, sees him stretching into new soundscapes, with Brad Jones (renowned for his inventive production work) at the helm. Tracks such as Problem Solved and Sunlight In My Pocket pulse with percussion, while others are coloured with woodwinds and strings. At the core, though, remains Mondlock’s storytelling – vivid, humane, and quietly profound. From the title track’s portrait of a young artist undone by early fame to The Dark, co-written with the late Guy Clark, he continues to illuminate the beauty and the mystery in the everyday.

Support comes from Matthew Waddoups. Usually found fronting a jazz band, Waddoups is returning to his acoustic roots, swapping the big-band sound for stripped-back blues and folk – a perfect prelude to Mondlock’s spellbinding set.

A rare chance to hear one of folk’s finest craftsmen, live and up close.
