Now in its 13th year, Hellensmusic returns each May to the historic surroundings of Hellens Manor, St Bartholomew’s Church, and The Walwyn Arms. Founded by pianist Christian Blackshaw and Adam Munthe, the festival combines four days of chamber concerts with a generous programme of free, open masterclasses running from Wednesday to Sunday.

Under the direction of Maya Iwabuchi (leader of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra) and Matthew Hunt (principal clarinettist of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen), this year’s edition brings together an outstanding international roster. Guest artists include Bruno Dellepelaire, Adrien Boisseau, Julien Quentin, Michael Cox, and Charlotte Scott, performing in a series of intimate, high-calibre chamber programmes.

The festival opens on Thursday 7 May at St Bartholomew’s Church with music inspired by journeys—both literal and imagined. Highlights across the weekend include Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Quintet, performed in the atmospheric Great Barn at Hellens Manor on Sunday. The much-loved pub concert returns to The Walwyn Arms on Friday evening, offering a spirited programme of “greatest hits” spanning three centuries.

Alongside the main concerts, Hellensmusic continues its commitment to nurturing young talent, inviting advanced international students to live and work alongside the artists for a week. Audiences are encouraged to soak up the festival atmosphere—dropping into daytime masterclasses, and enjoying the rare opportunity to hear students and professionals perform side by side in evening concerts and informal settings.
