Malvern’s jazz scene is set for a serious injection of West Coast cool this May, as newly-formed octet West Coast Sound make their eagerly anticipated live debut at Malvern Cube on Saturday 31st May.

This Malvern-based collective of seasoned players is bringing something truly special to the region’s music landscape: a pitch-perfect revival of the cool jazz era of the 1950s and ‘60s, with a repertoire drawn from the West Coast’s most iconic and innovative arrangers. Expect rare gems and sophisticated charts from Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool, alongside deep cuts from the Gerry Mulligan Concert Band and arrangements by the likes of Shorty Rogers, Bill Holman, Lennie Niehaus, Marty Paich, and others seldom heard live on this side of the Atlantic.

The band’s unique five-horn line-up features Maks Dymytruk (alto sax), Peter Hopcroft (tenor sax), Marie McNally (baritone sax), Robin Miller (trumpet), and Peter Johnson (trombone), anchored by a rhythm section comprising Kate Hill (piano), Max Davison (bass), and Jake Terry (drums). Together, they pay faithful homage to a golden era of jazz, while keeping things fresh and invigorating for contemporary ears.

The Malvern Cube show marks the beginning of a string of summer appearances for the ensemble, including performances at Malvern’s Priory Park, the Upton Jazz Festival, and Bottles Wine Bar in Worcester. Whether you’re a die-hard jazz enthusiast or simply curious about the genre, these gigs promise to be a rare treat.

Don’t miss this chance to catch West Coast Sound as they blow the cobwebs off mid-century jazz and breathe new life into a sound as cool today as it was back then.
