All-Day Busk to Back Worcester’s Script Haven

A Worcester writer and musician is striking a chord for a good cause – staging an all-day busk to raise vital funds for one of the city’s most cherished cultural spots.
Script Haven, perched at the top of High Street opposite the Elgar statue, is the inspired creation of former Worcestershire Poet Laureate and entrepreneur Leena Batchelor. The shop offers far more than shelves of books: it’s a welcoming hub for poetry readings, author signings, and community gatherings, with tea, coffee, and conversation always on hand.
Adding to its charm is a touch of literary heritage — in the 19th century, Charles Dickens himself stayed on the premises during a visit to Worcester.
But even the most creative ventures aren’t immune to tough economic times. With rising costs squeezing small businesses, Leena has issued an appeal to help keep Script Haven thriving. Answering the call is John Phillpott, a Battenhall-based writer, musician, and former newspaper journalist, who will busk outside the shop on Saturday, 22 November.
“Script Haven is an incredibly worthwhile venture,” says John. “Leena gives poets, writers, and other creatives a platform in such a positive, welcoming space. Many people who might never have shared their work publicly have found the confidence to ‘get up and give it a go’.”
John, who has played guitar and harmonica since his teens, plans to become a “human jukebox” for the day. With a repertoire ranging from blues and folk to period pop, country, and even a dash of classic jazz, he’ll be taking musical requests – though not, he stresses, numbered ones – in exchange for donations to Script Haven’s survival fund.
“Please come along,” he adds. “Browse the books, enjoy a drink, and listen to the music. Script Haven is a landmark for Worcester’s creative community – and it deserves to be supported for years to come.”
