Saxophonist and composer Mark Lockheart brings his latest project Shapeshifter to The Marr’s Bar in Worcester on Thursday 14th May, as part of the progressive, fortnightly programme curated by Worcestershire promoter Music Spoken Here.
Lockheart was part of the legendary 21-piece London based big band Loose Tubes in the 1980s and will be the third member of the band to perform at the venue following Iain Ballamyin April 2024 and Eddie Parker in December 2025. He went on to form Perfect Houseplants with pianist Huw Warren, bassist Dudley Phillips and drummer Martin France, releasing six albums between 1992 and 2002. He then joined Seb Rochford’s band Polar Bear, whose second album “Held on the Tips of Fingers” was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Prize and featured in Jazzwise Magazine’s publication “The 100 Jazz Albums that Shook The World”.
Shapeshifter is Lockheart’s latest collaboration with bassist Huw V Williams and drummer Jay Davis, who appeared at The Marr’s Bar with Eddie Parker’s Airborn in December last year. The trio share writing and move together through a common language of jazz, rock, classical and free improvisation, revelling in the unexpected! Their album Shapeshifter was released in March and this gig is the trio’s third in the West Midlands, following performances at The Hive in Shrewsbury and 1000 Trades in Birmingham in March.
Doors open at 7:30pm with Shapeshifter on stage at 8pm. Admission is complimentary for Music Spoken Here Club Members, or £15 on the door for non-members. For more details go to the Music Spoken Here website.
