A progressive live music club in Worcester returns in the autumn with a series of performances at The Marr’s Bar showcasing the music of Brazil.
The series is part of the “Kind of Jazz” programme organised by Music Spoken Here, now in its fifth year, bringing contemporary, original music to the city with gigs on the second and fourth Thursday from September through to June.
The ‘Brazilian Love Affair’ starts on Thursday 17th September, with Brazilian bassist, composer and producer Frederico Heliodoro. Music Spoken Here extended their fortnightly programme specifically to accommodate Frederico, in the UK for just two exclusive performances with his band before heading on to continental Europe in a special tour celebrating 10 years of international touring. Expect progressive, modern music from Brazil, combining jazz, electronic music, rock & blues with echoes of Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Beto Guedes.
The following Thursday (24th September), virtuoso Latin pianist Neil Angilley will be performing a spellbinding, uplifting take on infectious rhythms from Brazil and Cuba, incorporating instrumental virtuosity and 3-part vocal harmony with his trio, featuring Davide Mantovani on bass guitar and Davide Giovannini on drums. The three performed together at The Marr’s Bar in January, in Giovannini’s five-piece ‘Minas Project, but unfortunately storm Goretti came in that night and kept many away, so this is a great opportunity to see them performing for those that missed out.
On 22nd October, drummer, composer and proprietor of the award-winning Verdict Jazz Club in Brighton Tristan Banks returns after his first appearance at The Marr’s Bar in 2023 on his “View From Above” album launch tour. Tristan’s music is influenced from his time in Brazil and this gig will feature renowned jazz flautist Gareth Lockrane and another outstanding Latin pianist, John Crawford.
Finally, Baiana will be making a special appearance in the city for an exclusive performance on Thursday 12th November. Fronted by charismatic vocalist Laura Doyle singing in both Portuguese and English, this is a rare opportunity to see a full live show from the band outside of the festival circuit. Laura’s vocal style is reminiscent of the great romantic torch singers of the 40s and 50s and the Brazilian greats such as Elza Soares and Gal Costa, singing of lost love and broken hearts.
Music Spoken Here events are not ticketed. Instead, they operate a Club Membership, which includes guaranteed, complimentary admission and reserved seating for all events on their “Kind of Jazz” programme and discounted admission for other events occasionally promoted by them throughout the year at The Marr’s Bar.
