Following a mind-blowing performance from Brazilian artist Frederico Heliodoro last week, Music Spoken Here return to The Marr’s Bar on Thursday for the second gig in their ‘Brazilian Love Affair in Worcester’ series, featuring music inspired by Brazil and Cuba from the Neil Angilley Trio.
Pianist Neil is an original member of the Grammy-nominated band Down To The Bone who co-wrote and played on many of their albums, including ‘The Sweetness’, which reached number one in the US Billboard Jazz/Funk chart. He first appeared at The Marr’s Bar on the Music Spoken Here ‘Kind of Jazz’ program in May 2024 with the band Fusion Phew and he returned in January this year with drummer Davide Giovannini’s Minas Project, playing music inspired by the Minas Gerais region of Brazil. Angilley, Giovannini and Minas Project bassist Davide Mantovani have been recording and performing as the Neil Angilley Trio since 2007 and have released five albums – most recently a live performance recorded at London’s iconic 606 Club in 2022.
Angilley also tours with The Wonder of Stevie show, a project formed by saxophonist Derek Nash (Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) featuring the incredible vocalist Noel McCalla, which played at The Swan Theatre in Worcester in February this year. He started playing drums four years ago and has just released his second solo album ‘Back To Yesteryear’, featuring eight original tracks dedicated to the jazz-funk of the 1970s through to the early 1990s, which he approached for the first time as a drummer, starting with the groove rather than composing from the keyboard.
The trio on Thursday will be playing original music from their album repertoire that draws on the rhythms of Brazil, Uruguay and Cuba.
