The wonderful Fleece Inn plays host to Fleecey Folk on Sunday 22 November, as the Pagoda Project Trio bring their unique blend of traditional folk, experimentation, improvisation and plenty of humour to Bretforton.
Featuring stellar fiddle-singer Hannah Cumming, acclaimed accordionist Paul Hutchinson and clarinettist and bass clarinettist Karen Wimhurst, this is folk music with few boundaries. Traditional songs meet the unexpected, with sixteenth-century Playford tunes dancing alongside jazz inflections, beautiful vocals and bold original compositions.
Expect the ethereal to turn gutsy, passion and tears tempered by a good laugh, and an element of improvisation ensuring that no two evenings are ever quite the same. The combination of virtuosity and sheer enjoyment promises an uplifting night of music – just the thing for a cold November evening.
Hutchinson is perhaps best known as one half of much-loved duo Belshazzar’s Feast, who toured extensively for 25 years and were nominated for Best Duo at the BBC Folk Awards. Regarded as one of the country’s leading accordionists, his distinctive approach draws on everything from folk and jazz to 17th and 18th-century music.
His long-running interest in fusion music also led to the renowned Celtic jazzers Hoover the Dog, before Pagoda Project provided a vehicle for his own compositions alongside the talents of Karen Wimhurst. Their debut album Clarion received five-star reviews from Songlines and fRoots.
Now performing as a trio, the musicians are touring their new album Eddies, a collection of music shaped by their shared love of folk tradition, composition and improvisation.
