We’ve Been Framed

Movie poster artists, comic book illustrators and designers behind gig posters for some of the world’s biggest bands are coming together for a unique free art exhibition in Birmingham this October, raising funds for a local charity.
AMPjam Presents: We’ve Been Framed brings together more than 60 international artists, including acclaimed movie poster artist Matt Ferguson, comic book artists Jock and Tula Lotay, and artists whose work has appeared on posters for bands including Foo Fighters and Jack White.
Sponsored by The Jointworks and Birmingham Design Festival, the exhibition will showcase more than 60 original, one-off artworks inspired by films including Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Toy Story, The Lord of the Rings, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Odyssey and Lilo & Stitch.
Visitors get the first opportunity to see the complete collection, meet participating artists, browse exhibitor stalls and hear talks from leading names including West Midlands movie poster artist Paul Shipper.
The concept turns the traditional art exhibition on its head. Rather than simply creating an artwork and finding a frame to suit it, each artist was given an unusual or evocative frame – ranging from rare pieces of movie memorabilia and antiques to unexpected high-street finds – and challenged to create an original film-inspired work specifically for it.
The results are suitably inventive: Homer Simpson appears inside a giant pink doughnut, An American Werewolf in London occupies a historic London Underground ticket-office frame, Tron is housed inside a vintage computer, while Bruce Lee’s The Big Boss is presented in a 1920s Chinese dragon frame.
With major names from the worlds of film, comics, music and design involved, We’ve Been Framed promises a distinctly different kind of art show – and, importantly, one that’s free to visit and supports a Birmingham charity.
