Music Spoken Here presents Tristan Banks Quartet
The Marr’s Bar, Worcester
Thursday 22nd October, 7:30pm doors for 8pm start – £17 on the door (complimentary for MSH Club Members)
A series of concerts hosted by Worcestershire promoter Music Spoken Here, featuring Brazilian influenced music continues at The Marr’s Bar, Worcester on Thursday 22nd October with the Tristan Banks Quartet. Drummer, percussionist, composer and proprietor of the award-winning Verdict Jazz Club in Brighton will be returning to the city venue after making his first appearance on the Music Spoken Here programme back in April 2023.
Banks is a regular member of Steve Winwood’s band. Shortly after his first appearance in Worcester, he played at Maddison Square Garden and has just returned from another US tour with Winwood. Throughout his career, spanning more than 30 years, Banks has performed with artists as varied as Brian May, Van Morrison, Ronnie Wood, Roy Ayers, Beverley Knight and Alexander O’Neal. He has also toured with theatre shows The Lion King in the UK and Thriller Live in Europe and Brazil.
Growing up in Brighton with musical parents, Banks has also spent time in Brazil and the vast array of musical styles throughout the country has influenced his playing. In 1992 he joined the Brighton band Batu with Patrick Forge and Chris Franck, featuring Brazilian vocalist Bebeto De Souza. Franck, Forge and Banks went on to form the Afro-Brazilian outfit Da Lata when Batu disbanded in 1994.
Although Banks has recorded and co-written music on many albums over the last 30 years, it wasn’t until 2023 that he released his own music on the album View From Above, on Ubuntu Records. Matt Groom, of Preston Music, said at the time “Banks has the spirit of bossa nova coursing through him, and seems to be able to combine funk with tricky Latin rhythms effortlessly”
The Tristan Banks Quartet features Latin jazz maestro John Crawford on piano and bassist Davide Mantovani, who recently appeared at the Worcester club with the Neil Angilley Trio in September and with the Minas Project in January. For this performance, the band will be joined by top UK jazz flautist Gareth Lockrane.
Doors open at 7:30pm with the Tristan Banks Quartet starting around 8pm. Admission is complimentary for Music Spoken Here Club Members, or £17 on the door for non-members. For more information visit the Music Spoken Here website.
