With Halloween approaching, Midlands-based theatre company NeuNoir returns with its latest atmospheric reading of a classic supernatural tale – Algernon Blackwood’s The Listener, a chilling early 20th-century ghost story from the writer dubbed ‘The Ghost Man’.

A struggling writer, desperate for affordable accommodation, discovers a cheap room in a quiet London cul-de-sac. But after moving into the cold, isolated property, they soon realise there is a far greater cost than the rent suggests…

Told through diary entries, The Listener slowly builds a sense of unease as loneliness turns to fear. Drawing on Blackwood’s own experiences of poverty and isolation, the story explores themes that still resonate today, from wellbeing and solitude to the challenges of finding a place to call home.

One of the most influential supernatural writers of his time, Blackwood’s ‘strange stories’ of folklore, nature and quiet dread inspired generations of horror writers, including HP Lovecraft and Stephen King. His best-known works include The Wendigo, The Willows and Ancient Sorceries.

Read by Richard Usher, The Listener is NeuNoir’s sixth production, following acclaimed adaptations of works by WH Hodgson, EF Benson, MR James, Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe.
