When it comes to home entertainment in the 21st century, we’ve become accustomed to subscription plans. For a fixed monthly fee, you can watch as many movies or TV shows, stream as many songs, or read (or listen to) as many books as time allows.

However, a music promoter in Worcester is possibly the first ever to apply the subscription idea to LIVE music! Described by local DJ and club regular Jane Branigan as “the most progressive promoter in the West Midlands”, Music Spoken Here has been showcasing the best in UK jazz, funk and fusion at The Marr’s Bar in Worcester since May 2022.

Over 70 artists have already performed on the regular Thursday night events at the Marr’s Bar, with another 60 lined up between now and June, many playing in Worcester for the first time. They have included top industry players Yolanda Charles (bass player with Paul Weller, Robbie Williams, Hans Zimmer and Squeeze), Jason Rebello (pianist with Sting and Jeff Beck), Jeremy Stacey (drummer with King Crimson and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds), Paul Stacey (guitarist and Oasis producer) and Scott Hammond (drummer with Jethro Tull). The promoter’s varied program also showcases younger artists and bands making their mark on the contemporary, improvised music scene, including Rosie Frater-Taylor, Tom Ford, Dan Lockheart, Laimu and Zeñel.

Club membership was introduced in August 2023, with Music Spoken Here presenting monthly shows at The Marr’s Bar. For just £12.50 per month, members enjoy free entry to all gigs, reserved seating and a rather splendid Music Spoken Here T-shirt! With so many top bands to showcase, the 2024 program has increased to gigs every other Thursday and one or two Saturday night specials added for good measure! In February, new memberships will increase to £18 per month, but if you sign up before 1st February you can enjoy full membership benefits at the original price of just £12.50 per month for as long as your subscription remains active!
