There’s a rather different kind of cinema experience taking place beside the River Severn, where Diglis Basin Film Club has been bringing films, conversation and a sense of community to Worcester for the past three years.
Based on Portland Walk at Diglis, the Diglis Basin Film Club (DBFC) is a private members’ club that has established itself as a regular destination for film fans from the local area and further afield. Since opening in June 2023, the club has screened more than 150 films, combining new releases and classic favourites with a programme of special events.
Regular screenings currently take place on Saturday evenings, with Sunday afternoon matinées accompanied by afternoon tea. Saturday audiences can also enjoy light refreshments, including the club’s hot dogs, adding to the relaxed, informal atmosphere.
The films themselves are professionally presented using 4K projection and Dolby Atmos sound, creating an impressive cinema experience in a cosy setting. The programme also extends beyond film, with special events featuring concerts, opera and ballet, while some screenings include short talks or opportunities for audience discussion.
As a members’ club, DBFC also encourages its audience to have a say in what gets shown, with film suggestions welcomed. It has become as much a place to meet other film enthusiasts and make new connections as it is somewhere to watch a movie.
Membership currently costs £15 a year, covering the club’s film licensing costs, with individual screenings priced at £6 to cover venue hire and overheads. Both cash and card payments are accepted.
Due to film licensing restrictions, full details of upcoming screenings are distributed privately to members, meaning anyone wanting to discover what is coming up needs to join the club.
With more than 150 films already under its belt, Diglis Basin Film Club is continuing to build its own little corner of Worcester’s film community – one screening at a time.
